had this lovely little bird visit two evenings in a row.Stayed for just a very short flighty time for a bathe flying off when any other bird went near it.Looking through my bird books came up with willow warbler.Looking forward to my more knowledgable pals to confirm or deny.
It was a slim bird slightly smaller I thought than the goldfinch. So delicate but very nervous.

It could be Willow Warbler or Chiffchaff, they are very difficult to tell apart until they start to sing then you know which is which:-)

I have looked at the RSPB identifier and it said that the willow warbler is brighter than the chiffchaff and I would say this was quite a bright little bird especially the underparts

I'm going with Willow Warbler Sheila but as Lynmiranda says they are notoriously difficult, the fact that you particularly mention its nervous habit makes me think it is the WW.

What a delight though, you really do make me envious, your stream seems to be a magical place!

thanks shysongbird,it is the stream that brings the rarer birds into my garden because they tend just to bathe then fly off not feeding.

Again you are making the need (want not need OH says) for a pond here more noticeable my friend. I have no idea on the ID but lovely all the same!!!
