Hubby found this egg left in the wrens nest after the young had fledged (never managed to catch sight of them sadly).Must have been infertile.I would have though it would have been crushed. Not a very good picture on the penny but it shows the size of the egg better.

Hi Sheila.
What a great photo of the Wren's egg. Putting it on the penny to show off it's size is a good idea.

That was a clever idea with the coin as I always think it is difficult to get a real idea of sizes in photos.

That was very sad about the Chaffinch, my heart sank as I have been a little worried about a couple of birds in my garden over the last few days. I had a problem in the late summer last year and it worried me to death, I felt it was perhaps my fault somehow. I do try to be very hygienic but it is difficult when so many birds feed together to know what to do, especially when they rely on you. I know the RSPB and others say you should stop feeding for a while but then that would make me feel guilty as well. I really don't know what the answer is, it is heartbreaking to see them suffer. I just hope in time they develop an immunity to it.

hi sheila, some great photos yet again, albeit one tinged with sadness, i think that once you have started feeding the birds then to a certain extent they rely on that food source, hope it is an isolated case sheila, love the yellow hammer pic.

I would have thought the egg would have been removed from the nest
