invaded by dozens of starlings who took turns to take
a bath I spent over five minutes watching their antics
they certainly made some splashes

That's great, Shiela. I've only once seen a starling have a bath on my garden, but before I had the guttering fixed there was a dip at the corner and they would bathe there. As all the houses round here are of a similar age I expect there's plenty more gutter baths.

The Starlings in Moms garden regularly bathe in her bird bath but never in the numbers you have there my friend!

And since posting about them not using my bath I've seen one or more use it everyday, including a blackbird that was shouting at a starling to stay out until he was outnumbered.

thanks Steve and Jayne for your comments.I think water to bathe is a big attraction for the birds especially when its icy.
